NOTE - The Beer Taste BBQ is an idea in that everyone attending brings one case of craft/micro beers from wherever they live so that everyone can sample good beers from all over the US. Feel free to mix it up - get any genre you want. 2006’s offerings were outstanding & very diverse - keep it up!!

Also, any one willing to bring (or prepare) REAL barbeque and/or other sides please contact BTBBQ Chairman John Minteer (BIGJ54) at jkcp at adelphia dot net with what you can/will bring, and if you are providing a means to, or will require a means to, reheat on site.

There is a group rate. To get this rate, mention you are attending the “Single Wing Coaching Conclave” at King’s College. This should get you a nightly rate of $61. You can certainly find cheaper places to stay, but IMHO you will will missing out on a lot of after hours BS chalk talk/video sessions which are as valuable, if not more valuable, then the Conclave’s presentations.

On Jan. 1, USC and Michigan will meet for a record eighth time in the Rose Bowl, renewing a tradition dating to 1948. This is the first in a series revisiting each of the Trojans-Wolverines Rose Bowl games.

It all began so delightfully. In the weeks leading up to the 1948 Rose Bowl, Bob Bastian and his USC teammates retreated to Santa Barbara for daily scrimmages and nights spent in the posh Spanish Colonial Biltmore hotel. New Year’s day dawned clear and sunny, and despite being weary from the hard practices, the Trojans caught a train to Pasadena, where they arrived with high spirits at the Rose Bowl, to the roar of an announced crowd of 87,516.

“That was the last pleasant thing I remember,” said Bastian, an offensive lineman who had returned to play for USC after serving in North Africa during World War II.

Head coach Fritz Crisler let loose his “Mad Magicians” with one of the trickiest offenses in college football history. “For sheer deception, there had been nothing like the Magicians before,” wrote Ivan Kaye in Michigan Today. “And there has been nothing like them since — three men handling the ball was just an ordinary play. The plays that really gave them a kick were the ones where four or even five men handled the ball. It would wear out the spectators and drive defenses crazy.”

As a result, Michigan, led by tailback Bob Chappius, wingback Chalmers “Bump” Elliott, QB Howard Yerges and fullback Jack Weisenburger, went 10-0 in 1947. While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were named No. 1 by the AP at the end of the regular season, Michigan forced the voters to reconsider after crushing USC 49-0 in the Rose Bowl, and were ranked No. 1 in an unofficial postseason AP poll. Some people recognize the U/M “Mad Magicians” football team of 1947 as one of the best college football teams of all time. The single-wing offense featured the spinner cycle and the buck lateral series, where as many as 5 players might handle the ball on one snap from the center. The team, coached by Fritz Crisler, ran 180 plays from seven different formations. Members of the backfield were Jack Weisenburger, Fullback; Bob Chappuis, Tailback; Bump Elliott, Wingback, and Howard Yerges, Quarterback.
